Better Education, Please

My grandson will be in High School in September. He's a solid B student but is not into academia (the pursuit of research, education, and scholarship.) It has been interesting to watch him in Elementary School (he was bullied at lot), Middle School (social and kind to those not in the "in" crowd).

I wish our school district would add both hours per day (currently 6 or less) and more days per year (currently 180 days or less).  Chile boasts the most hours of education at 1,007 hours per year.  Japan has 243 days of school each year.

There are also a few subjects that I think should be taught at school as well as home. Other countries focus on interesting topics. Danish schools teach empathy as a dedicated subject, known as “Klassen Tid” (Class Time), from ages 6 to 16.

During these lessons, students discuss their emotions, personal struggles, and group dynamics in a safe and supportive environment. Teachers guide the conversations, helping students develop emotional intelligence, active listening skills, and conflict resolution strategies.

Japan offers Moral education (the process of teaching values and ethics to help people distinguish right from wrong). It also involves teaching how to act with consideration for others, fairness, and human welfare.

England: Has classes on Information and Communication Technology (includes social media), Citizenship and Design + Technology.

In addition to all of the above, I think our schools should offer Time Management, Negotiation and safe Social Media. Maybe we could also offer some vocational choices.

But especially we should offer citizenship and politics. I think we have many voters who should brush up on these last two as well.

  1. I don't have any kids or grandkids but those in our grade schools will someday run the country and care for the elderly one way or another. I couldn't agree more with everything in this post. But in the era of 45/47 too much of it would be labeled 'woke' and be banned.
